On Tuesday I was deployed to Rockhampton, QLD to help with clean up, supply relief and connection issues after Tropical Cyclone Debbie’s wrath on Northern QLD and NSW. What an absolutely eye opening experience it’s been. I’ve met some of the strongest people who walk around looking for a chat and with a smile on their faces; all while living in the emergency evacuation centre waiting for clearance back to their flood stricken homes.
To be completely honest, I’m feeling a little down and out about the role that I could’ve played – but didn’t get the chance to. Fortunately, the flood was forecast to be much worse than it actually was – meaning there weren’t as people in need of emergency services. This is obviously fantastic and the best possible outcome, however, I guess I don’t feel ‘used’ enough! I wanted to be as helpful as possible and didn’t really get the chance. Moreover, I didn’t get to make struggling people’s lives easier. ANYWAY!
I had the most amazing time and would do it again in a heart beat. I strongly recommend volunteering for disaster relief or volunteering in general to anybody able!
